Chiwawa Cross

Chiwawa CrossI have a Silky Terrier Cross Chiwawa and I want to find a purebred cat, what should be.?

Please I need to know.

Hi all,

Thank you for planning an adoption of a kitten who needs a home.

In fact there are some breeds that can get along better with dogs than others, but how your new cat is introduced to your dog will most certainly make a difference in how they can make their relationship.

After discussing this issue with several reputable breeders while I was writing articles about the characteristics sveral other race, the races that I discovered that potentially will get better with canines: Maine Coon breed American Shorthair (domestic shorthair, not really a race, but a mixed race), the Ragdoll, the Abysinnian, just to name a few. Siamese cats are known for their ability to get along with dogs. I have a friend who breeds Siamese, Orientals and Persians, and also breeds Shih Tzu. They got along wonderfully.

As for your dog is concerned, in my search of your mixed breed should be able to accept a pot, provided you do the introductions slowly and patiently.

I hope this information helped.

By the way, I agree totally with JC on the Siamese. Having lived with them for years, I find them to be one of the most affectionate breeds in the world, and also quite adaptable since they are very smart.

Good luck to you!

It is not about race it is all about temperament. Laid back cats usually learn to accept well-behaved dog. the high-tension will not. If you go to the SPCA and ask them for suggestions, you'll probably have a large number of cats to choose from. Insert the two gradually over a period of one week or two, and you should have very few problems. Terriers can be a bit brash, and should never, ever be allowed to chase the cat, even in play. A bit of obedience training the dog goes a long way towards having the two become friends.

For the record - Siamese are not better nor worse than any other race when it comes to living with other dogs or cats! It's all about the temperament of the individual, and not race. I have had Siamese all my life, usually with dogs, and foster Siamese numerous because of my participation in the rescue. Except for the occasional dog very nervous or hate those who have been attacked by a dog, they all got along well.

I disagree, race matters. Some cats, like Siamese twins, do not like living with dogs (they actually tolerate a human being for food - they are totally independent), while other cats, a Maine Coon as seem to thrive in households where there are lots of people, children and animals, activity. MCs like a lot of stimulation and are very sociable. However, if you found a cat shelter, you probably do not have much choice about the breed. They will all be mixed with who knows what.

It's gonna be the way you present them that makes the difference. Put your cat in isolation (one room) until they become very comfortable in this space (which can take several days). The dog and cat feel otherr under the door and get to know it is ok the other is there. In very controlled (left)) allow your dog to enter the room for short periods, gradually becoming more gradually with more freedom of movement (several days). Remember, this is the protected area of the cat, and if the cat becomes uncomfortable, remove the dog, and try again later. Then, slowly, allow the cat to leave.
