Can anyone give step by step in becoming a falconer and get a bird and the costs and time? step by step instructions would be great. if anyone has experience of falconry in general please share your thoughts of it. I live in Virginia. also once you have your license and gear are there no more and no cost is low, because they can hunt there own food? and yet the costs of falconry and how long you need to spend with them every day. also what is the easiest to train raptors. and how are the American kestrels?
Thank you all.
Few people fascinated by the magic of a falcon in flight trained realize what demands are placed on a man who aspires to be a falconer. Even fewer would be willing to make sacrifices stringent requirements on long-term time 365 days a year, effort, and money.
The media often sensationalized falconry, because the sport can be exciting to watch and brings with it the story of antiquity. But the public media are often inaccurate in their representation of what it takes to be a falconer.
I could go on, instead read the book by Rebecca LIFT K O'Connor for a personal account in falconry. I went to one of his readings, was fascinated and I bought the book myself.
Good luck
First, I put you on a short course of falconry, and then you can try to save a bird. Shuttleworth in Bedfordshire offer courses in falconry
First you must find someone who is already a falconer cert. This person will guide you and you will work under the
You may or may not need to attend classes but you will be given material to study and be tested on. Once you pass the test you are ready for your first Falcon
You will be considered an apprentice falconer and you capture a red-tailed hawk or a kestrel. Then you need to make his train. Before all this, you must build a suitable enclosure and approved.
I understand that you must be an apprentice for 2 years, but I do not know. Once you have learning needs fullfilled you are free to choose what the bird of prey, and you can also work with shelters to become a therapist for injured birds. Your falcon caught may be freely returned to the wild.
You still have to find food for your bird as he will not drive for you to start. Food and how you eat depends on the falcon. You will then always feed your bird is called washed meat and reward them with fresh meat for the return to you with prey. Most falconers hunting pigeons, rabbits etc. for their hawks and soak it and freeze for later use.
You spend tons of time with them every day to accomplish the training. A hawk is a wild animal and if not properly worked revert back. You can spend a little money on this "hobby" esp for housing. Once your basic supplies are purchased there is little to the cost unless you upgrade. Most falconers have tracking devices in their birds, they fly off and get lost. Much time is spent hunting to try to coax your bird back to you as he sits in a large tree.
Kestrels are a neat bird hunting but can not be rational with small game ... ie, mice, moles, small birds etc. Honestly, you will not be able to hunt game birds, for example, until you can upgrade to a bigger falcon anyway. The first 2 are just learning about birds.
First, you will be apprenticed to a permit for Falconer (I think) at least 2 years. The cost will be approximately $ 100-300 per week and will be a good job 40 hours per week. Forget any notion that he will leave an apprentice in exchange for the work you do. Why should he do when he can get paid??
Then you will get all your state and federal permits. This will be different from state to state. in my state, it was about $ 1,500 for the last time I checked.
Then you have to build your home for birds. A common acceptability.
