Feline Diabetes Treatment

Cats with diabetes are treated the same way that humans suffering from diabetes? As in, close monitoring of carbohydrate intake, blood glucose testing and insulin injections? I have diabetes, but my cat does not, but I know it exists. I wondered if the management of the state were similar. Thx.
