Fish Tank Lids

I have a 10 gallon tank, my father gave me. it does not work with lids, but what Im most likely going to end with is piece of glass he gave me. and I wondered for the light for the fish, which should I use? or should I just buy a lid? its going to be used to begin to raise fish food for my 55-gallon tank. I thought instead of going out and spending money to get the magazine why not to breed so I can put them in when I want. Thank you for help with lids are useful. Also any good tips for raising im new to it.
