Adding a reservoir of freshwater fish in your home can be a great way to add a decorative focal point that is fun for everyone. And because home aquariums are becoming more popular, there is no shortage of supply of fish stores the latest and greatest tanks, accessories and of course fish. The good news is that most of these fish stores are owned by people who love to share their enthusiasm for all things fish with their customers.

When you decide you want to enjoy a reservoir of freshwater fish there are several things you should keep in mind. Where would you put your new aquarium and what is best for the size in the designated area. Aquariums are available in a variety of shapes and sizes so it is best to visit your local fish store to get a good idea of what is available to meet your needs. Be sure to ask questions about what you want and store employees will be able to point you in the right direction.

As you decide on the type and size of the tank, you will also need to think about the type of fish you want to keep. This is where research on different species of fish is a must. You can not just simply choose the fish you like to store and mix together al. If you have a community tank, a tank with many types of fish, then you must have fish that get along well with others. If you lean more towards a Cichlid tank then you should be more cautious as most cichlids are aggressive toward other fish.

Once you get your new freshwater aquarium it is time to configure. While most people have no patience for the best thing to do is fill your tank with water, set up your decorative gravel, rocks, plants and everything that catches your attention and let stand for few weeks. Make sure you have all your supplies filtration and air running during this period. The reason why it is important to do is to let the chlorine dissipate from the water and get the beneficial bacteria a chance to develop.

If you put the fish in a tank that has had time to settle you will end up with the new tank syndrome, which can be extremely dangerous to fish and kill them. This bacterium is the primary resource of fish waste disposal. Without it, toxic levels of ammonia and other waste gases accumulate rapidly in water. Give the bacteria a chance to create a cycle of fish-friendly environment that protects your purchases.

A tank of freshwater fish takes some work, both the implementation and maintenance. But the fruits of his look of your home is more than it is worth.
