The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was founded in 1872 as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (LCA). In 1896, the school, located in Blacksburg in Virginia, has changed its name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (or VPI for short). Today, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is more commonly known as Virginia Tech or VT. The University is recognized for its programs in architecture, agriculture, commerce, engineering and science. Currently, the school is regarded as having the largest population of full-time students in Virginia. Students and alumni of this school strive to meet the school's motto, Ut Prosim, which means "That I may serve".

The majority of athletics at Virginia Tech are known as the Hokies. However, members of the swim team affectionately call themselves "H2Okies" an obvious pun on the chemical formula that represents water. Although many know that Hokie is used to refer to fans and teams VT sports, many do not know the origin of the word. In 1896, when the name of the school was changed from TGC to VPI, the school naturally need to change his mood. Thus, in the same year The student body held a competition for new-dear-writing. The Old Hokie Cheer, which was written by OM Stull won first prize and has been used for several years. According to Stull, the Hokie name was simply something he invented. Finally, because of the factor attracting the attention of mood, VT students, fans, alumni, and athletic teams were later called the Hokies. Today, Hokie "officially" a loyal fan VT.

Most traditions school of Virginia Tech makes its home in 1896. In fact, the official colors, even the school - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - have been selected in the same year. According to the committee to select the colors they chose orange-brown combo, because it was a mixture of unique colors and special, never seen in other team sports. The official mascot of the VT Hokie bird, which is very similar to Turkey. The reason behind this was probably because sports teams VT previously known as the Fighting Gobblers. Consequently, the artists who created the official mascot drawing upon it for the Hokie bird turkey good old days. Despite the name change, the VT stuck with their previous ground Turkey. In the first years after the creation of Virginia Tech, a rivalry with the Virginia Military Institute has evolved rapidly. As the feud deepened, the traditional military South, an annual football game between VMI and VT, was held on Thanksgiving Day in Roanoke until the 70s. Today, the great rivals of the VT Hokies are the Miami Hurricanes, Highlanders, West Virginia and the Virginia Cavaliers.
