Hoof abscess?? It looks like my daughter has an abscess. It pierced the frog is about 5 days. If the blacksmith in and cleaned it and told me he can abscess. Well yesterday, she looked a little gimpy and when I touched the frog, she was in obvious pain. It was not the day after the farrier was out. So I called and he told me to wrap the foot with an onion underneath. He said that something or other sulfur help to draw the abscess. So I'm waiting .... It seems OK now. It does not seem to be in much pain ... only if you press the frog. Have you ever heard of guys wrapping their feet with an onion slice under the frog??? Just thought I would share ...
Soaking in warm Epsom salt water twice a day + has proven
Here is a link that gives many options for treating an abscess ...

Edit - I found this about onions: "If you have a dental abscess or a boil, place a piece of onion in this region to draw the infection and promote circulation for faster healing."
Interesting. Personally, I like and have used herbal remedies and alternatives holstic for my horse, but never an onion. Unfortunately, the separation of what works and what is really folklore is tricky.

Edit: I use Uptite Poultice and we had a horse who has just recovered from an abscess in the barn, the owner has used to wrap up with after dipping, too. http://www.doversaddlery.com/product . asp ...
I've never heard of that one. It's very interesting. I've always been told about soaking with Epsom salts. If it works, I'd say stick with it.
Nope ... Epson salt and warm water. Thats what was recommended by my vet. Also Bute. It relieves the pain if the animal walking on most and help the abscess to the bust.
never heard of ... But the blacksmith knows better than anyone. They specialze in the shoes, so I would say go with what the blacksmith!
I always did what he had salt Epson ... never heard of using an onion. I also used Salve ichthamol up after soaking.
Have you been dipping every day to keep it clean? In addition to soaking, I would put on a permanent bath - get a disposable diaper, Epsom salts, tape and packaging veterinarian. Clean your feet well, then cover the bottom of it with Epsom salts. Place the layer on the foot and wrap the vet. Then cover it with tape. Do not get the tape on her skin! Then soak for 5 minutes. It will help attract and keep it clean abscess well. I hope you put on antibiotics as well? A puncture wound in the frog can easily become infected.
And no, I've never heard of using an onion, but I think I've heard of using onions on human beings to draw infections, so I guess that might work.
I've never heard of wraping the anchor with an onion. But I had one of my horses have anbsecess. Suger I mixed and some antibiotics. and set up and wrap a Diper on the bottom and wrapped it, then go to the film with adhesive tape. requires 4-7 days in general
Never heard of that one before, but I heard of the onion to boils, etc. on people.
I am a veterinarian and I've never heard of it, but I think I can explain how it works. As the horse walks on the onion and sprayed it crashed in a hyper tonic mixture as Epsom salts and hot water. Perhaps even better, because it is pasty. Being hyper tonic.
