Horse Retirement

Horse RetirementWhat is the average retirement age for a thoroughbred horse (by this I mean older male)?

And also what is the average age of retirement for a thoroughbred mare?

I do not know that there is a certain average. If you want to talk racing thoroughbreds, has many factors. Durability is a big factor. Usually, if they stay healthy, they are lucky to stay on track to complete their season of four years. Lava Man is a gelding, ran until he is six years. Sometimes geldings stay on the track a bit longer because there is no money to be made in the breeding shed. standards in retirement go to farms such as Three Chimneys, Airdrie Stud, Claiborne, etc. They are then reserved for mares, sometimes several times a day during the breeding season.
For thoroughbred mares, usually the age of retirement is the same. Once they are off the track, they are usually sold or used as broodmares. It depends on their livestock. Thus, a thoroughbred racing is retiring at a relatively young age. I hope this answers your question.

for shopping or for other types of riding? idk race, but for most other types of riding, horses can be used to good effect in their 20s, 30s and even. Racehorses are generally younger retirees, and used in other types of riding (we call OTTB, off track thoroughbred), such as Mount Holder Olympic Becky's Comet.
