I do think Nice sunny place? safe? oriented north? etc etc! want to give my kid the best chance for the winter!

I do not know where you need them for THEIR convenience - wrigglers stirring may know (see link) - but for YOUR convenience, I think you should put them near your roses so that beetles can feast on aphids aphids when they attack.
