One of three men convicted in Southeast Portland in 1988 murder of Ethiopian immigrant Mulugeta Seraw was arrested Friday on charges that he violated his parole by contacting members of a white supremacist group, announced authorities.

Kyle Brewster, 36, was arrested without incident during a routine visit with his parole officer Friday morning. He was booked into the detention center without bail Multnomah County authorized.

County Community Justice recommends Brewster be remanded for the remainder of his parole, which expires in 2008, said Robb Freda-Cowie, a spokesman for the agency.

Brewster spent 14 years in prison for participating in a hate crime of Oregon's most notorious. The former skinhead was convicted of manslaughter in the first degree murder in the 1988 baseball-bat Seraw. Although the conviction put Brewster and two other members of the East Side White Pride in jail, the murder cast a shadow over Portland, which has been dubbed "Skinhead City" by a leading nation groups civil rights.

The crime led to the adoption of the Oregon law on hate crimes revolutionary. It also paved the way for a civil trial that financially crippled one of the most influential racist nation.

Brewster was arrested in the middle of a significant increase in the activity of white supremacist groups across the country and in the region, a trend observers have called alarming. The groups have become more knowledgeable on the recruitment, exploitation of the Internet and the creation of labels that promote rock bands, said Robert Jacobs, the Anti-Defamation League's Pacific Northwest regional director.

"Many of these people are simple unstable," said Jacobs. The instability increases the potential for violence - "you do not know when it will happen."

The groups also drifted into drug trafficking, robbery home invasion and the graffiti, crimes more traditionally associated with African American and Latino gangs, "said Steven Stroud, a former skinhead co-founder of the Oregon Spotlight, a Portland-based organization that monitors hate groups.

enforcement of the law, including the FBI and the Portland Police Bureau, have increasingly seen a rise in assaults and vandalism linked to white supremacist groups, Freda-Cowie said.

parole officers warned Brewster when he was released November 19, 2002, they revoke his parole if he associated with gang members. Since then, Freda-Cowie said, "it is quite clear that he has not changed his ideas."

People should be rewarded for doing good deeds. Good is what is good for me and mine so obviously it is generally subjective as evil. What's good for me is often bad for my enemies or competition.

Depends, the swastika on his head before turning to the right or left?

Yes, he deserves the chair even if it is unconstitutional in most states!

sorry too long

I do not know why you're on this tangent about skinheads, but do not worry, most people I know are intolerant of such behavior and think it should be treated in the strictest requirements of the Law under the hate crimes, and yes, turn off the case.

Hate crimes are bad and should be pursued, regardless of who was the target.

Is not the real princess
