Swallow Bird Nest

Swallow Bird Nest How to prevent swallows from building nests in your home and commercial buildings

Here come the Swallows, it must be spring. Each year these beautiful birds begin to build their nests of mud on our buildings, barns, houses and other areas like bridges. The eaves of your house is the perfect place for nest building swallows provide protection form the elements and predators. Each year the owners are struggling with swallow nests and disorder and debris they bring with them.

It should be noted that in the United States, all swallows are classified as migratory insectivorous birds under the Migratory Bird Act Treaty of 1918. Swallows are also protected by state regulation. Once the birds have begun building their nests, it is too late to get rid of them. Control methods should be adopted before the return of the swallows. This will guard against the potential fines for disturbing the nests or injure birds.

Nesting sites:

Swallows generally build their nest in a pleasant shade, as under the eaves of a house, a bridge or viaduct, and other areas with right angles on the walls. The swallows choose a wall texture that is easy to "paste" from their nesting material such as wood, stucco, masonry and concrete.

Damage:

Swallows like to nest in colonies causing a big problem for the construction and homeowners. Thousands of dollars of damage are caused each year by their droppings and nest debris. Not only the excrement left by the swallows unsightly, it can be dangerous, disease carrying, which can be transmitted to humans. The nest will eventually fall to the ground where there is a chance that bugs, fleas, ticks and mites in it can spread to domestic animals such as dogs and cats.

How to counter:

Exclusion is the best way to deter pest swallows. You must make it impossible for birds to build their nests. There are several methods of exclusion that can be used.

  • Trapping: A plastic mesh with a 3 / 4 "netting can be suspended from the outer edge of the eaves of the house to the side wall to create an angle of 45 degrees. This will keep the swallows entering the shelter favored the space under the roofs of houses and buildings to build their nests. Note: Install net before the swallows arrive. It can be left up all year or withdrawn after the season nesting.
  • Bird Spikes: Install plastic or stainless steel bird spikes at the junction where the wall meets the house swallows keep a foothold on the wall and setting their nesting material. Bird Spikes are easy to install with glue or screws.
  • Slippery Group: There are products that create a smooth surface under the eaves of your house so that the swallows are not able to "stick" their nesting material for her. These products are generally made of PVC plastic that is attached under the eaves with adhesive. Creating a smooth surface on the nesting walls will discourage the birds and they will look elsewhere to find a good nesting place.
  • Swallow Guard (n Nasty Nest) is new product on the market that uses a spring wire end attached to a base clear Plexiglas that is ready to accede to the eaves of your home or business. The swallows do not fly through this "distraction" and therefore not build their nests in areas protected by swallowing custody.

NOTE: Do not use an adhesive gel
