Zebra Otocinclus

Zebra OtocinclusFish do not buy for the beginning aquarist

Then you have or are planning to buy an aquarium size modest start in the hobby. Now it's time for a little fish! (Well, maybe not. First read about cycling.) You enter a large chain store company and head of the fish section, where you are greeted by a variety of species to use. Unfortunately, no information is displayed on the care needs for the species of interest, or the information is inaccurate. So, you ask an employee about them. "Sure, they say, staring at the wall of tanks." This could go in your community aquarium of 10 gallons. "

Unfortunately, the large chain stores employees often do not really know much about fish. They may specialize in a different type of pet, or perhaps they were hired for their prowess as a storage shelf, rather than an interest or knowledge of pets. Perhaps employees are familiar with the fish, but are under pressure to sell regardless of whether they are suitable for the customer.

The chain stores for pets have a bad habit of selling the fish they can not care for the long term. Fish that grow to be very important are the most common victim of this practice, but aggressive fish or fish with very specific needs in water chemistry as often return home with the unwitting aquarists. To fight against this problem, I wrote this list of fish most commonly sold to people who will not be able to take care of them.

1. Oscars

South American cichlids These pretty look like a great addition to any tank smaller when they are about an inch long. Unfortunately, they can achieve greater than 18 inches, and they do not always tell you that in the store. In addition, as they grow they will need occasional feeding fish to maintain a healthy diet, making them more expensive in the long run than the fish can be fed only flake or pellets.

Instead, try: Bolivian Rams

It is a dwarf cichlid colorful South American, who reached only about 3 inches long. It is at once rustic and peaceful, making it suitable for a small community tank.

2. Common Pleco

These catfish are often sold to suckermouth beginner aquarists as the solution to a problem with algae. There are some problems with it, however. First, these fish can and will grow to be two feet long, excluding them from small 100 gallon tank. In addition, algae problems are often a symptom of excessive nitrate in water. In this case, adding another fish will only exacerbate the problem.

Instead, try: Dwarf Plecos, Clown Plecos, Corydoras, Otocinclus

Fortunately, there are quite a few types of Plecos, and many of them are of a size much more manageable. Bristlenose Plecos Plecos and Clown are only a few species that cease to grow by 4 to 6 inches. If you're just looking for a bottom sensor, the many species of catfish Corydoras are an excellent choice. These fish swim in schools of social 5 or more and are much more active than sedentary species Plecostomus. Most species of Corydoras are between 1 and 2 inches, which adds a small school in your aquarium is possible in tanks as small as 10 gallons. They are not algae eaters, however, if you want an algae eater suckermouth for your small tank, a good choice might be the Otocinclus catfish. These cousins of the small Plecos reach a maximum of about 1.5 inches.

3. Red-tail Catfish

This cat is very striking when it is young, which leads many inexperienced aquarists buy them, thinking they will stop growing at a manageable size and keep that color attractive. As the common Pleco, however, the only thing that stops the growth of the fish died. Contrary to the Pleco, the fish also eat the rest of your fish as soon as he can fit them into his mouth. To add insult to injury, the colo.
